September 8th marks the introduction of Tenuta Villanova to Canada. One of the oldest wineries in Italy, they have been making wine in Fruili for 510 yrs, starting with monks and cardinals. However, while they have been around for a long time, they are still quite young in terms of exporting out of Italy. That will change a little next week with the introduction of a Pinot Grigio and a Merlot to Canadian wine shops, liquor boards and restaurants.
We had a chance to taste the upcoming release at Cafe Il Nido this week. Franco Felice, a very happy host, chef, and owner stood by while we sampled first white, then red. The award-winning Pinot Grigio is toasty and flowery with a smooth finish and it’s easy to see why it’s the winery’s flagship wine, especially when the price point of $14.99 (for both, at the Liquor Distribution Board) was announced. The merlot is gently tannic with black fruit and cherry flavours. A Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot/Cab Sauv blend are also made, but will not be imported at this time.
All the grapes are estate grown on the property at Isonzo and mostly picked by hand. This sounds like a great property, with a 150 year old tree and a Relais Chateau in the works. I might have to make a visit.
