Stella’s New Digs

I was sad enough to be moving away from all the food shops and eateries on Commercial Drive, but I went into a near panic when I realized that there were no pubs near my new house at Oak and 16th. The Kino Cafe flamenco bar was not going to cut it and cocktails on the patio doesn’t work so well when it’s raining. But then I remembered that Stella’s had opened a new location at Cambie and 16th that I had yet to try out, so I happily set off to explore my potential new watering hole.
Like the Commercial Drive location, their focus is on beer and they have a lot of it. You’ll be given one one menu with more recognizable beers and cocktails on it and another, much larger one that is pure beer nerdery. There is everything from the fruity, cherry Bellevue Kriek, to rare, monk-produced Trappist ales. Piraat and Nostradamus are already a favorites and I plan to make my way through the rest of the menu over the summer.
There’s an impressive array of beers on tap and if you’re leaning in that direction, I would highly recommend the Blanche De Chambly or the Hoegaarden. To order a pint of their namesake seems easy, but would be an utter waste. Don’t be intimidated by beers that sound alien, Dan behind the bar has an uncanny ability to figure out exactly what you’d like – just ask.
