Blogathon 2009 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society

July 25th is fast approaching. What does that mean for Tiny Bites? Another 24-hour relay of fundraising for a local cause, like the one we did last year for the David Suzuki Foundation.

Our 2009 goal: to raise $2000 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.

Blogathon 2009 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society

How does a Blogathon work?

A blogathon is a fundraiser where people raise awareness by participating in a relay, much like the 10km Vancouver Sun Run, the 30-Hour Famine, or a school walk-a-thon. In this case, bloggers around the world unite to blog for 24 hours straight, churning out 1 post every 30 minutes, to support a charity of their choice. Funds are raised through pledges per hour or pledges upon completion, or through immediate donations to the cause.

When is Blogathon this year? It begins at 6am on July 25, 2009 and rages on till 6am on July 26th.

Want to learn more? Visit our Blogathon 2009 Overview.

49 articles in a day! That’s a lot of noise.

We know it can be, and the last thing we want to do is generate 49 posts that have little relevance to you or future Tiny Bites readers. That’s why we’re doing things a little differently this year:

We’re preparing full-length, high-quality Tiny Bites articles in advance. We don’t want to sound incoherent at 3 o’clock in the morning, and I’m sure you don’t want to hear it, either. Instead, Bruce, Degan and I are working now to complete nearly 40 articles that will be published during the Blogathon period. These articles are quality you expect from this site on any other day, and will be searchable and relevant to you whether you read them along with us on Blogathon Day or spot them later.

We’re taking up shifts to prove we’re losing sleep. For those of you that worry that these pre-written posts will allow us to shirk on the insomnia requirement, there’s an easy way to check up on us. In lieu of live posts every 30 minutes, the three of us will be using Twitter to communicate with you while each of us is on shift. Together, we’ll cover the 24-hour period* that is Blogathon Day:

  • Bruce: 6am – 2pm
  • Karen: 2pm – 6pm at The Workspace
  • Degan: 6pm – 2am
  • Karen: 2am – 6am at The Workspace

* It’s true that none of us is staying up for 24 hours straight. Bruce and Degan are my proxies, since my doctors would freak out if I attempted Blogathon alone this year in my current state.

We’re fundraising in advance. Just because we’re being asked to stay up all day doesn’t mean you have to. From today onwards, any giveaways that you see until Blogathon closes on July 26th will have share one eligibility requirement: every $10 you donate to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society earns you 1 chance to win.

We’re rounding up a terrific Grand Prize. Thanks to the generosity of our event sponsors, we are happy to offer you the chance to win the Tiny Bites Grand Prize: a “Vancouver Food Bank” basket of local goodies that is already valued at over $300! Check in on the Prizes page to see what’s inside today and to see what new goodies we bring in leading up to Blogathon Day.

Want to contribute to the Grand Prize too? Become a sponsor and support a worthwhile cause!

Will you help us to spread the word about our fundraiser and help us achieve our goal of $2000 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society?

We hope you will.

[...] In order to make the blogathon experience for you, as my readers, my sponsors and my friends, more pleasant, and to ensure that what happens on July 25th is truly amazing and a cut above and beyond what you’d get from my daily FriendFeed, here are the rules I’ve established as part of my Blogathon participation (with some inspiration from Karen Hamilton at TinyBites): [...]
