Bites of Asia Series: Twitter Weekly Digest for 2009-01-18

  • Check out time. Goodbye Philippines – time to head to Macau! #
  • 8hr layover in Manila on the way to Macau means one last stop at Sentro. Ginataang tilapia, bacon BBQ, halo halo, sago’t gulaman. Yum!! #
  • Now surrounded by the opulence of Macau. Staying at Grandview Hotel in Taipa. Dinner at Roka plus some slots at the Venetian last night. #
  • Agenda for today: lunch at Long Kei; walking tour of historic Macau; daytime casinoing; dinner at O Manel with my uncle et al. #
  • Long Kei was oh so very good. Fish maw and egg drop soup; braised seasonal veggies in oyster sauce; steamed pork spare ribs in apricot sauce #
  • Photos of Macau starting to pour in on Flickr. Check ‘em out. #
  • Spending the afternoon in Macau before taking ferry to Hong Kong. Lunch plans at either Litoral or EOD Cafe. #
  • Portuguese fried rice and stewed duck in herbs were the highlights of lunch at Macau’s Restaurante Litoral. Skip the saffron pork. #
  • Checked in at Metropark Kowloon. Not doing much tonight – shopping for warm clothes and letting Kurt get over his head cold #
  • So much for a night in. Going for dinner at Rice Paper followed by shouting at horses at Happy Valley Racecourse. #
  • Rice Paper is modern Viet fare but their curries put Vancouver Thai restaurants to shame. Loved the pork neck red curry we had last night! #
  • Today: shopping for sweaters in Mong Kok and an afternoon at Disneyland Hong Kong #
  • Breakfast consisted of detouring across 4 bakeries and 2 street stalls along the way to Mong Kok MTR. What fun that was! #
  • Could’ve spent days shopping at Langham Mall in Mong Kok. Finds are hipster/ trendy and reasonably priced compared to TST or Times Square. #
  • Lunch stop at McDonald’s before Disneyland HK (Kurt had a hankering for a Big Mac). I opted for a local variation: red bean pie. #
  • 6 hours at Disneyland Hong Kong. Best bits: Space Mountain, Philharmagic 3D show, saving universe with Buzz Lightyear, Chinese Mickey Mouse. #
  • Random dinner pick in heart of Mong Kok: Nam Fung Restaurant. Rice noodles with beef and baked pork chop for under 40 HKD apiece. #
  • Sightseeing day. Breakfast on the go; lunch at private kitchen La Bouteille; dinner with friends at Peking Garden Restaurant in Central. #
  • Peking duck dinner followed by dessert at Honeymoon Dessert, which was followed by buying booze at the 7-11 at LFK and chatting with expats. #
  • Hiking up to the Buddha in Lantau plus lunch in Ngong Ping. The rest will hike back down, but we’ll take the scenic cable car route instead. #
  • Wound up hiking up and down the Lantau trails. +17kms later, every joint and muscle in protest. Having Ovaltine ice cream as reward. #
  • RSVP to Vancouver Wine Casual’s sparkling and Italian wine tasting Feb 2nd: $25 per person. Not on FB? RSVP @winebard. http://ow.ly/45c #
  • Long soak in the bath does wonders for aching muscles. Cracked open new book for our flight tomorrow: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. #
  • Packed and checked out of Metropark Kowloon. Reluctantly heading to MTR to take the Airport Express home =( #
  • At our gate at the Hong Kong airport. 1 hour till boarding. #
  • Who likes yogurt and is free on Wednesday night? #
