Merry Christmas, one and all! What did you find under your tree?
Since we’d be away, we didn’t do much Christmas in Vancouver this year, but we did somehow manage to accumulate some pretty nifty food lover gifts before we left on our trip. These are some of our favourites:
Had a Glass: Top 100 Wines for 2009 under $20
My husband got this great local wine reference by Kenji Hodgson and James Nevison, who also run the Wine Guys column in the Vancouver Province. Everything listed is readily available in Greater Vancouver and at an average price point of $15. What a wise book to deliver to the public for 2009.
This book was responsible for our recent gluttony over the Chat-en-Oeuf Cotes du Ventoux. Here’s their take on the bottle:
Travelling France, we pointed our sub-subcompact Citroen down the gully of the Rhone and landed in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It’s a beautiful, historic town (be sure to visit the Pope’s crumbling tower)–the streets lined with mosaic stone walles interrupted by marble wooden doorways…and tour buses. Loads of them. Every sightseeing package must include a stop in Chateauneuf. No doubt every tourist must leave with a bottle of the sacred wine. We did. We bought the hype. Drank it, and realized our Euros were probably better spent on some Cotes du Ventoux. Multiple bottles of affordable and quaffable Cotes du Ventoux! Like this one.
Fresh: Seasonal Recipes Made with Local Foods
My mother-in-law got me this cookbook by Vancouver restauranteur John Bishop knowing my penchant for cooking locally and with the seasons.
After she got home, we chatted on the phone about how she had flipped through it before she wrapped it up for me and wished that she had picked up a copy for herself. Little does she know that we grabbed a copy for her and will ship it in January…Merry Christmas, Mom!
Delicious Chicken Soup
We won a signed copy of this one-recipe cookbook that is part tutorial, part children’s book, and part art form. Even better is that it’s from Vancouver chef Andrey Durbach of Parkside fame. Great for the coffee table and the kitchen.
Thanks to Farmstead Wines for putting on the Twitter contest that got us this book!
Stella’s Strawberry Blueberry Jam
My father-in-law sent me a jar of the best jam in the country! Flown in from Winnipeg breakfast institution, Stella’s, this jam features just five ingredients on its label: strawberries, blueberries, sugar, pectin, and love. The love is what makes it so grand.
