Menu for Hope 5: Vancouver represents

4 Comments Karen HamiltonDecember 20, 2008

Tiny Bites is participating last-minute in this worldwide charity event, so please make sure you take action by the end of Wednesday, December 24, 2008.  Okay – read on.

Matt, the precipitator of Tiny Bites that is better known Down Under as (the) Abstract Gourmet, implored me recently to participate in a global food blogger event that occurs every year around the Christmas season.

Menu for Hope

Menu for Hope has been organized for the past 5 years by the legendary Chez Pim, with proceeds going to the United Nation’s World Food Program. This year, Menu for Hope targets the development of a school food program in Lesotho, Africa.  There is also hope that whatever is raised in 2008 meets or exceeds last year’s global collection of $90,000.

I have been running around like a madman getting ready for our month-long Asia getaway, and scheduling in a global fundraiser should have been the last thing I prioritized before flying out on the 23rd.  But try as I might, Menu for Hope kept on nagging at my conscience.  I was further appalled to see that the West Coast was not represented at all in the Canadian effort.  For shame!

Thanks to the generous sponsorship by 3 local businesses, I am ecstatic to report that Vancouver will indeed make its mark this year with a prize package that showcases what the city offers to the global food community.

What’s in the Tiny Bites prize pack?

Reference prize code CA10 in your donation.  If you win, you will receive:

A signed copy of Vij’s: Elegant & Inspired Indian Cuisine for Menu for Hope 5

This cookbook shows you how to make fantastic meals like Vancouver’s Indian gem of a restaurant, Vij’s.  This copy will be signed by Vij’s owners Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala.  Thanks very much to Annika Reinhardt of Social Bites for sponsoring this special contribution.

Martin Arndorfer 2006 Von den Terrassen (Farmstead Wines)

Prize sponsor and Farmstead Wines founder Anthony Nicalo has this to say about this bottle:

“Martin’s first vineyard in the Strasser Wechselberg first growth was planted in 1958 as a traditional field blend. The Neuburger, Riesling and Grüner Veltliner grape varieties are all planted at a density of one vine per square meter in an area that is only one-third of an acre. Von den Terrassen or “from the terraces” is just that, from steep steps cut into the mountainside. Only a few hundred bottles are made each year, as this is a true labor of love that is worked 100% by hand without synthetic chemicals or pesticides.”

5 Premium Annual Memberships from Rouxbe.com

I’m thrilled to be a partner for what is now my favourite online cooking resource, and doubly thrilled that CEO Joe Girard has donated not 1, but 5 premium memberships towards Menu for Hope. The folks at Rouxbe are extremely familiar with the UN’s World Food Program; under their Rouxbe for Life effort, 15% of all of Rouxbe’s proceeds already go towards this same organization. So reserve 1 membership for yourself and consider paying it forward to 4 of your loved ones that would welcome the opportunity to improve their culinary techniques.

What’s this prize pack worth, Karen?

$600. That’s right.  $600.

Who’s eligible for this prize pack?

Because wine is a little tricky to send around the world, the Tiny Bites package can only be shipped to addresses in Canada and the United States.

Oooh, I want a Menu for Hope prize!  What else could I go for?

If you are not eligible for or interested in the Tiny Bites package, you can still scan through the rest of the global prizes that are available:

How to I donate / buy raffle tickets?

Every $10 that you donate through the official donation site grants you 1 raffle ticket towards the prize pack of your choice.  There is no limit to how many tickets or how many prize packs you wish to enter yourself in for.  Just make sure to follow the instructions below so that the organizers know which raffles to toss in your name for.

Donation instructions:

  1. Choose a prize or prizes of your choice from our Menu for Hope at http://chezpim.com.
  2. Go to the donation site at http://www.firstgiving.com/menuforhope5 and make your donation.
  3. Each $10 you donate will give you one raffle ticket toward a prize of your choice. Please specify which prize you’d like in the Personal Message section in the donation form when confirming your donation. You must describe how many tickets you’d like to attribute per prize, referencing the prize code each time.  For example, a donation of $50 can be allotted as 2 tickets for EU01 and 3 tickets for Tiny Bites package CA10. In “Personal Message”, you would write “2 x EU01, 3 x CA10″.
  4. If your company matches your charity donation, please check the box and fill in the information so we could claim the corporate match.
  5. Please allow Menu for Hope to see your email address so that we could contact you in case you win. Your email address will not be shared with anyone.

Good luck!

Will you donate for a prize or two? Comment to tell me what looks interesting to you.  Just remember: you have until Christmas Day (that’s 11:59pm on December 24th) to register your donation.

Winners will be contacted with the good news on January 12, 2008.

Since I don’t get back from Asia until January 18th, please be patient as I send out your prize; it’ll take me a few days after I return to get it out the door.

I dunno about precipitator Karen… perhaps antagonist would be a better word :)
