When Tiny Bites met Social Bites…

4 Comments Karen HamiltonNovember 6, 2008

How cute is that… Tiny Bites meets Social Bites :-)

That sentence, mailed to my inbox in April, effectively changed my acquaintance of Annika Reinhardt, founder of SocialBites.ca, from chance Facebook encounter to Vancouver food exploration buddy. Preliminary email correspondence about the food scene in Vancouver resulted in our first gastronomic meetup at Max’s Deli on Oak & 15th.

Max's Deli: Annika of SocialBites.ca

My uncertainty about sustaining conversation was unwarranted.  Our short meetup turned into hours of exchanging restaurant notes and talking about Annika’s then-emerging Social Bites concept: culinary hops through the kitchens of Vancouver’s hobby chefs.

Max's Deli: strawberry mousse

Between bites of strawberry mousse and cranberry meringue tarts, I listened, intrigued.  She described an evening where a small group of people experience a multi-course meal whose dishes are created by 4 different hobby chefs.  At the end of the night, after participants have had the chance to get to know each other over food and drink, the prize for best Hobby Chef of the evening is given out.  There is more to it than this, so find out how it works through the Social Bites website.

While this was the first time I had heard of such an event, meetups of this nature are popular in Germany, and Annika had participated in one of them in the recent past.  She had so much fun jumping from place to place and meeting new people over good food that she felt compelled to start a similar concept that would be palatable to Vancouverites.

Since that first meeting, Annika and I have continued to have dining adventures together, and through these subsequent encounters, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of Social Bites.  Didn’t get the chance to tell you about the Social Bites site launch when it went live last month (bad Karen), but with today being Annika’s birthday, I thought it fitting to make up for it now!

Social Bites Dinner Excursions

The first Social Bites Dinner Excursion is in Kitsilano on Saturday, November 29th, and I cannot wait!

If you love to cook for a crowd, consider becoming a hobby chef for upcoming dinner excursions. There’s one more spot for the Kitsilano event.  I live too far away to be a candidate, so for those of you that live in Kitsilano, please contact Annika if you’d like to give it a go.

Want to participate as a diner?  Make sure to state your interest and be alerted when tickets go on sale.  Part of the proceeds of this inaugural dinner excursion will go to the Vancouver Food Bank.

Hope to see you on the 29th!

First off…. wow. This seems to be the time of the year for bloggers birthdays. A happy belated to yours, your friend Annika’s today, mine tomorrow.

The idea of having a night with a small group of hobby chefs to display their creations for the others to try sounds like a fantastic idea. I don’t know as much about making it a competition, I would be just happy trying out cuisines I might not normally indulge in. Hopefully us actually in the business might be invited along too.

Just wondering the name of the Korean cafe you talked about in your comment and much thanks for reading the scrawling i call writing
