This is Blogathon post #23 of 48 in support of the David Suzuki Foundation
Do your part to support fisheries that operate sustainably. What can you do?
According to the David Suzuki Foundation, who is a member of Sustainable Seafood Canada (along with watchgroups like SeaChoice and Ocean Wise), you can definitely make a difference by becoming an informed consumer. Here’s how:
- Check out one of the online guides to sustainable seafood, like SeaChoice, State of the Catch, Ocean Wise or Seafood Watch to help inform your choices.
- Eat locally caught, fresh seafood that shows up on the green list on the seafood guides.
- Avoid red-listed species such as farmed salmon.
- Ask your fish store or server about the seafood they sell.
More information, tips, and video resources are available on the David Suzuki Foundation’s Sustainable Seafood page.

Got something to say?

I’ve written a few posts on sustainable food, SeaChoice and OceanWise on my blog. Thanks for highlighting this important issue Karen! Keep going strong!
Not a problem, Raul. As we started to less red meat (a consequence of our commitment to the Nature Challenge last year), it became important to us to know what seafood is “kosher”. I carry SeaChoice’s seafood guide in my wallet which I pull out whenever we dine or grocery shop. It’s getting to the point where I can remember which ones are okay without referring to the card!
For those of you that want to read up on Raul’s thoughts on the matter, check out his post on EPIC and Ocean Wise.
