How I discovered AGRO Cafe

3 Comments July 26, 2008

This is Blogathon post #29 of 48 in support of the David Suzuki Foundation

I must thank my chiropractor for being situated in Yaletown. Because of my frequent trips to his office in the morning, I discovered both PHAT Deli and AGRO Cafe, who for some reason share a love of 4 letters in all caps.

AGRO Cafe: my Blogathon workstation

AGRO Cafe is on the corner of Davie and Hamilton, very close to hurly burly competitor JJ Bean. For a while, I yo-yoed between the two as I determined a favourite. It only took a week of frustration with JJ Bean’s pastry disappearing act (which occurs at 9:30am, it seems) before I completely switched over to AGRO Cafe.

AGRO Cafe: latte, panini, decor

It wasn’t just about the food variety. AGRO has the tiny but deadly Clover, which seems to make a fresher tasting cup than the equivalent at JJ Bean. AGRO’s knowledge of their stock is also hard to beat. Choosing a bean from their menu of 8 often comes with tasting notes that read like something out of Wine Spectator. The Costa Rica sample that Matti just brought out to me, for example, has “floral notes and subtle nuances”. I’m currently trying to catch those subtleties on my palate…all I can say with my newbie knowledge is that it tastes damn good.

yeah, a lot of people from the coffee industry end up working in the wine industry – you should attend a “coffee tasting” one day – it’s exactly like a wine tasting, but you blow on your coffee before you sip it. learning all about coffee is what made me transition into wine!
