Weekend miscellanea

4 Comments May 26, 2008

What a busy week this has been! With our anniversary, the REM concert, and revving up for a new job, there just wasn’t enough time to photoedit and blog about Eat! Vancouver, Tuesday’s IVSA New Product Salon, and Thursday’s dark chocolate blind tasting (despite all that cocoa keeping me up and wired until 6am).

So instead of a comprehensive post of any of the above, I’ll share quick impressions until there’s opportunity to give each event its proper due.

Dark chocolate blind tasting

The first Tiny Bites event of 2008 was a dark chocolate blind tasting at our humble abode. 10 chocolates, 10 cocoa-loving participants, strawberries galore, cheesy puffy gougeres by the talented Jason, a selection of malbec, port, and ice wine, and spirited debate on the Los Angeles auditions of So You Think You Can Dance, Season 4. Compilation of our findings will be published as soon as I can get to it.

IVSA New Product Salon, May 20

Khristian of Waldorf Wine Group kindly invited me to attend the IVSA‘s latest New Product Salon. There was an overwhelming number of importers present, so for the most part I focussed my wine exploration down to new rosé to hit BC shelves. I didn’t discover anything that furthered my longtime rosé quest, but I did encounter the lovely Martin Codax Albarino 2006 that tittered the tastebuds with its wobbly, sensual mouthfeel. Find it at restaurants like Abigail’s Party or be prepared to buy it by the case.

Stuff I liked at Eat! Vancouver

I’m going to reserve my scathing comments about Eat! Vancouver for when I can post my tirade in full. For now, let me share what I did enjoy: running into FatTireTribe; being handed the first edition of Edible Vancouver by editor Debbra Mikaelsen; perusing the fantabulous submissions of the BC Chef’s Association’s Chocolate Competition (including the Hyatt’s Marriott’s butter sculpture pictured above); getting Chef Mior, courtesy of Tourism Malaysia, to do bartender-style tricks as he pulled a new pot of Teh Tarik.

More coverage of each of these events (plus all the new-to-us eateries that we visited) are coming your way this week.

Hey Karen, sounds like you had a busy week! On the topic of rosés, I have some suggestions!! Joie’s is absolutely fabulous with grilled salmon, Dirty Laundry’s Hush tastes like strawberries and cheese, and Peju’s is perfect for the patio. Let me know if you’re interested – I have a bottle of Joie’s and a couple bottles of Hush on hand!

Christina, how did I miss your rosé recommendations?! Have had the Joie before. It’s good for what you can get in North America but still a far cry from what we loved in France. Haven’t tried Hush or Peju’s yet. Can I still take you up on a rosé fest one of these days?

Got something to say?
