Contest alert! Will David Suzuki dig your garden?

David Suzuki Digs My Garden photo contest

If you haven’t noticed that David Suzuki is my hero, you will see much evidence of it over the course of Summer 2008. That’s because the David Suzuki Foundation is revving up for this year’s David Suzuki Digs My Garden photo contest.

Our growing balcony garden

This is the fledgling herb and tomato garden that we’ve amassed over the past few weeks. It’ll take a labour of love to get it photogenic enough to enter it as a Balcony Bliss submission (this year’s newest contest category). We hope that the gardening tips we’ll receive by participating in this contest will help us to enjoy fresh, herbtastic meals for the months to come.

Here are some quick links for the contest which runs from June 4 – September 1, 2008:

Greetings, Gastown

5 Comments May 30, 2008

My first week at the new job is a bag of mixed blessings for the ol’ food blog. On the one hand, I’ve had precious little spare time to blog about last week in more detail. On the other hand, my office is situated in a bustling part of Gastown, which in my opinion is Vancouver’s burgeoning restaurant hotspot. Here’s a very quick taste of the eateries I’ve lunched at this week.

Et Voilà!: Saint Tropez galette

Et Voilà! made my reluctant return to the world of food courts a little bit easier to bear. This galette of mushroom, feta, pesto, and prosciutto worked nicely and was an alternative to the sea of fast food options that surround.

Momo Sushi

Enjoyed a decent chirashi don at Momo Sushi, which is a couple doors down from the office. One colleague swears by their chicken katsu and waits patiently for this 20-minute order.

Brioche

The chorizo panini I had this afternoon was the highlight of my lunch week (but my point n’ shoot didn’t deliver, argh). Brioche itself is a fantastic discovery…literally. I had to double back more than a few times in the twisting corridor from Water Street to arrive at their Cordova Street entrance. It’s worth the journey, and I’m coming back real soon.

Name that cooking sound and win an Annual Premium Membership at Rouxbe!

1 Comment May 26, 2008

Congratulations to John Principe for correctly identifying the mystery sound bite! Check it out in its proper context: it was the food mill used in the Sundried Tomato Sauce Recipe on Rouxbe.com.

Guess I’ll have to find some other way to procure a Rouxbe premium membership…justifying the cost to my accountant of a husband unfortunately hasn’t worked!

We are currently flummoxed by Rouxbe’s mystery soundclip. I thought it was a whisk in a metal bowl, but that had already been guessed. My husband thought it was a salad spinner, but Dawn, co-founder of Rouxbe.com, already replied none of the above have hit the mark. With a chance to win an Annual Premium Membership, which means free access to all of Rouxbe’s beautifully produced tutorials and their soon to come Cooking School, why don’t you try a hand at this pop quiz?

They’ll be doling out more hints as time goes by. Good luck!
